November 1 1983
Did my first corporate
gig tonight, some ritzy place in Arizona. I had to sign a
non-disclosure. Dessert topping espionage is alive and well. I always
thought that people who are in the entertainment business are big kids
and that corporations attracted the adults of the world. Not true.
From what I see it’s a pressure cooker of high school angst and forced
facades in loafers. I play golf with some mid-level guys and the
maturity level is hovering around whoopee cushions and fake vomit. I
can’t believe their shirts. That night I’m in my bungalow. They
deliver a bowl of fruit and a bottle of Crown Royal. Nice. The show
goes well. Thank God the big-wigs sat up front so everyone else knew
when to laugh. After a big steak I head back to my pad. I get a knock
and it’s the woman who arranged my travel. I invite her in and she
raves about the show and segues into a dissertation on marriage and
her 3 ex-husbands. She’s been drinking. I wind up getting a baby oil
rub while she explains how she invested her money from the
settlements. Here I am naked and all oiled up getting financial advice
while the sun sets over sagebrush. No sex. She splits with a Bartlett
pear and I have 2 fingers of Crown neat. I crank up the a.c.
