Just got back from a hell gig in Jersey. I have no idea where I was.
Picked up by Randy in a Monte Carlo. Randy is one of those guys who
started smoking pot at thirteen and never looked back or ahead. He's
got a crucifix hanging from the rearview mirror with a picture of Jim
Morrison taped over Christ. Chain smoking Newports and sipping rum and
coke from a Jetsons plastic mug. Yellowed fingers around a faded Astro.
He drives with one hand at four o'clock and offers bong hits. We pull
up to the club. A square concrete turd in a pockmarked lot. A museum
for mid-70 vehicles. We enter through the back and hang out in the
"green room". Sodas stacked ass high near an ice machine. Disco music
blasting. The owner comes back and offers us any appetizer we want at
fifty percent off. The music stops and they take a shag covered box
and drop it at one end of the dance floor. A cheap microphone and
stand. The stage is set, show time! Half the crowd is listening; the
other half buzzed on ghetto coke heckles. Show over. Randy drives us
back. He starts to nod. I keep him up by talking about the Doors. He
tries to watch the road. I watch him and the road. Through the tunnel,
back alive. Fifty bucks in my pocket, I call my girlfriend. She's on
the rag, I hit the sack.
